Avoid like the plague
My wife and I spent a few days touring the English Lakes and Scottish Northwest Coast, and this appalling "hotel" was the absolute nadir of our trip. In one word - sh1thole.
I have stayed in hundreds of hotels, worked for some of the very best, and this is amongst the VERY worst; the only place poorer than this - I turned around and left!
The place is tired to the point of falling apart; interestingly, I note that it has apparently recently changed hands, and it would appear that the previous owners had condemned the wooden terrace at the rear due to its disrepair, whereas the new owners simply cut the hazard tape and reopened it, leaving the remnants of said tape hanging there to represent their concern for their customers. It reflects that concern perfectly!
The place is filthy, unkempt, poorly managed, and utterly low rent. Oddly enough, at 11.30 on the morning before our arrival, we met a couple who had just arrived at the Kylesku Hotel, they had just travelled up from The Morar Hotel (which, given the timing, meant that they had left at the earliest opportunity - I don't blame them!), they had warned us that we would be disappointed, but they had no way of expressing just how bad this experience was going to be.
I don't understand exactly what they're doing with their laundry, but my wife noticed a strange smell on a hand towel folded on top of the pile of towels on the bed. She brought it to my attention: the towel in question had a clear odour of wet dog; the other towels all smelt different; none had been laundered with fabric conditioner; and I suspect (based on the non-uniform odour) that no detergent had been used either. A casual inspection of the room revealed a mouldy windowsill, a filthy shower drain, and a very poor standard of paintwork. It was so bad my wife refused to get into the bed and slept (clothed) on top of it - I have NEVER known this before.
We (somewhat inexplicably) dined in the "Silversands Restaurant" - sounds lovely, but it would be better, or more accurately, described as "Dead fly diner". We were seated by one of the windows; we were met with a pair of dead bluebottles that were big enough to be seen across the room, and yet the following morning, they were still there. The staff's approach could be detected by the sound of their shoes sticking to the floor, and the tabletops were no better, as the wife noted at the time: "If a pea falls off your plate here, you wouldn't put it in your mouth!"
We decided to opt for safer items on the menu, and we figured that you can't go far wrong with pie and chips. In fairness, the pie filling was alright, but the dish was served with frozen mixed vegetables; when I asked if there was gravy, the waiter looked confused. The chips, well, they were...interesting, cut like ceiling coving; why, I have no idea. The pie top was another frozen item, and that sums the food offering up: cheap and nasty.
At breakfast the following morning, we were sat again next to another window, and again, covered in dead midges. The food consisted of the cheapest, nastiest sausages, bacon that was 50% rind, tattie scones that were entirely inedible, raw tomatoes, black pudding that was undercooked and entirely saturated in fat and the poorest quality haggis we encountered on our travels, all topped off with a heap of fried eggs that looked like they were going to be there for the duration of the breakfast service.
There was a somewhat telling feature of the dinner service: we were asked to pay for the meal before we left the dining room. No quality hotel would ever not simply charge the room for such, but that's just it: You will pay up front for everything, because if you hadn't, you'd probably walk away and stay somewhere else.
What these people know about running a quality hotel operation you could carve on the ar*e of an ant with a blunt axe, but boy, do they know how to run a scam!
