Ok food - awful service

We visited Portaferry Hotel expecting the usual carvery, only to find out that this has apparently been discontinued. No problem—we ordered from the menu instead.
Unfortunately, the service was extremely disappointing. We waited around 45 minutes for roast beef, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy. The waiting staff seemed disinterested and, to put it mildly, rather shambolic.
There’s definitely potential here, but the hotel needs to decide what it wants to be and, more importantly, needs to have competent, attentive staff dealing with the public. It could be a good place, but there’s a lot of room for improvement.

Very disappointed.

We have been visiting this hotel for many years and this is our worst experience. We found the bar and restaurant staff inexperienced unhelpful and unfriendly. We relocated to another restaurant .

bad service

Me and my girlfriend came into the hotel for a late dinner, and was served by a young girl, short, blonde hair, on the larger side. We both ordered steak and chips and as she was taking our orders she said to herself how f’ing boring under her breathe and stormed off not even asking if we needed drinks with our meal. as she came back and served us our food she handed us both the plates opposed to setting them on the table, and give me a sort of (side eye) and walked off as we finished our meal she was already waiting for us with the bill and just handed it to me and said “there’s the bill” will not be coming back

Nice food, disgusting toilets

Called in for lunch, seated quickly and the food was tasty and the waitresses were pleasant. Before leaving we went to use the toilets. They were really disgusting. The door from the hallway was filthy for starters. I didn't even want to touch it. Then the toilet area really needs a deep clean, every ledge, corner etc was really dusty/dirty/grimey. The taps were heavily corroded with bits missing to tell you which tap is hot/cold, complete germ traps. The silicone around the sinks was black and had bits missing, the cupboards had missing handles and again, they needed a good scrub.
Nice tiles and modern paint colour is no substitute for cleanliness.

Gift Vouchers

I am writing this review primarily to make others aware of the gift voucher policy before purchasing one as a gift.
I had a £100 gift voucher for The Portaferry Hotel which expired on the 28 May 2026. Unfortunately, I overlooked the expiry date and contacted the hotel shortly afterwards to ask whether a short extension could be granted so that my husband and I could use it for a birthday meal.
While I accept responsibility for missing the expiry date, I was disappointed that no flexibility or goodwill gesture could be offered. The explanation given was that the voucher could not be extended because the till system would not accept it after the expiry date.
The staff member who responded was polite and professional, and I appreciate their reply. However, losing the full value of a £100 voucher over what I felt was a relatively short period after expiry was very disappointing.
My advice to anyone purchasing a gift voucher from this hotel is to be very aware of the expiry date and ensure it is used well in advance, as there appears to be little flexibility once it has expired. Based on my experience, this has left me with a negative impression of the hotel's customer service
