A pleasure for the senses and the heart!
A warm welcome and a staff available at any time and for any questions. Especially if you have a room overlooking the sea (and not the pool), silence and bird song accompany you all day. The restaurant (although it is, of course, much more expensive than the pizzerias in the area, is also recommended. Good food and impeccable service. The pool is clean and the atmosphere is nice (especially if there are no families with children out of control).
We will be happy to return if the opportunity arises.

The Caserne Pianetamaratea
I booked a stay from July 3 to July 6 in a "Deluxe" triple room with a sea view for €812. We occupied room 538. Unfortunately, we left the hotel the very next day at noon due to our great disappointment.
The entrance hall is magnificent and gives an excellent first impression. Unfortunately, it is practically the only positive point of our stay. Upon our arrival, we had to pay an additional €77 to access the pool. The "Deluxe" room did not meet our expectations at all: one key with a huge old-fashioned keychain, coffee and tea for a fee (€2 per drink), tea served in cardboard cups… For a 4-star hotel, this is hard to understand.
Breakfast was the biggest disappointment. For a buffet advertised at €28, I found the quality very insufficient. The juices came from vending machines and not from fresh juice. The fruits did not give an impression of freshness and some seemed to come from cans. The cold buffet and the hot buffet seemed to be made up mainly of industrial products. The scrambled eggs were tasteless. As for the coffee, served by a vending machine, it is probably one of the worst coffees I have ever had in a hotel in Italy. If you want a real espresso, freshly squeezed orange juice, or an omelet, you still have to pay an extra charge.
At the pool, I only discovered after paying the extra charge that a swim cap was mandatory. I did not have one, but I was wearing a hat that completely covered my hair. I explained that in terms of hygiene it served the same purpose and I also asked how that prevented hair from falling from the beard or chest. I never received a convincing answer. The lifeguard and then the manager refused any discussion and the tone quickly escalated. When I requested a refund for the remaining nights in order to leave the hotel, it was denied.
Despite this refusal, I preferred to lose my money rather than risk new conflicts in the following days. From that moment on, I no longer felt like I was in a hotel, but in a barracks where one must follow the rules without question. One books a hotel to relax, forget the daily grind, and have a pleasant time, not to experience this kind of atmosphere. That is why we preferred to leave the establishment the next day.
From the balcony of room 538, I then observed a guest arrive with two chihuahuas near the pool. The dogs came to drink from the pool without it seeming to pose any problem. Later, I also saw a young woman swim for several minutes without a swim cap. The lifeguard remained seated observing her without intervening. It was only after I took a photo that he finally got up to ask her to put on a cap. I had the feeling that the rules were not enforced with the same rigor for all guests.
Another contradiction: the regulations require calm around the pool starting at 9:30 AM, but as early as 8:30 AM, the gardeners were using a particularly noisy hedge trimmer and leaf blower. In the evening, a karaoke session lasted until midnight, preventing us from sleeping with the windows open despite the view of the sea.
I travel very regularly and often stay at 4-star hotels. Unfortunately, this is one of the most disappointing experiences I have ever had. We left after just one night and finished our weekend at another 4-star hotel where the services, welcome, and sense of service were perfectly aligned with the advertised standard.

A large hotel with fab views and great pool
I booked directly with the hotel and received a favorable room rate. We travelled by train and took a taxi from the station. The hotel is in a very elevated position above the bay. The bay is beautiful but we were pretty much stranded without transport.
The following day we walked downhill to Maratea along the road but discovered the walking trail to Christ the Redeemer statue for our return, uphill walk, so we took that until we were close to the hotel. It was a much nicer walk. In total, including a short walk around the town, we walked 9km.
I had booked a suite. It was large and pretty basic but this is reflected in the price. If the suite had been more fancy, the price would have been more fancy. The terrace was equally huge with beautiful views of the bay. The suite was impeccably clean and kept so by the loveliest of chamber maids.
We happened to be staying when there was a company convention in situ. There were 300 company guests and then my husband and me. It was hilarious. We are not Italian but watched on with interest. Not being Italian and not being part of the company convention, we were pretty easy to spot. Despite, or perhaps because of the convention, we felt that we were known by the staff and were treated very well as they clearly recognised that we were somewhat outnumbered. (150:1)
The food was fine and the dining staff very pleasant.
The swimming pool was a real treat. Hats are compulsory.
Beatrice at reception was particularly pleasant and helpful while the manager was approachable, professional, helpful and also quite witty!
So why not 5*? I'm not sure. There were small things that simply didn't suit us. E.g. a drinks machine at breakfast which does reduce the personal contact with staff and makes the dining experience feel unnecessarily impersonal.
We will look back on our stay very positively and will laugh at how we ended up in an Italian car-parts company convention for a weekend.

What a joke. They advertise all these wonderful amenities and when we arrived there was absolutely nothing available. No spa, no beach, no tennis, no laundry facilities, no hair salon. We would never have stayed here if we had know. When we complained they offered us a free drink! I have complained through the hotel and the refuse to respond and tried to get a refund from Expedia with no luck. Don't go to this hotel if you are expecting lots to do.....there is nothing!
